ReJean is bringing greenery To GetSetUp with Gardening

ReJean spent much of her youth in Ohio but for quite some time now has been a Colorado native.

She first found out about GetSetUp through an announcement via AARP back in October. Then she signed up for a bunch of classes at once to test them out, starting with the Dog Social hour with Marv.

“I think when I was invited to be an ambassador then I started thinking about what is not out there that might be of interest. For me, I realized it was gardening. I’ve gardened for a long time.”

ReJean was a member of a gardening club when she first moved to Colorado. And while she hadn’t gardened extensively before it was a fun way to socialize and learn. She soon developed a passion for it. Plus she had been exposed to gardening since her parents moved the family to the suburbs to start doing some farming.

Gardening as a passion

Yet, it wasn’t until she met her husband and they settled down together that gardening became a real passion.

“Gardening across the US is very different. Lots of things grow naturally in the Midwest. In Colorado, everything has to get planted. When people buy homes the landscaping of flowers and even vegetable gardens add value to the property.”

ReJean prefers gardening that revolves around florals and plants but enjoys learning any new green thumb tricks of the trade.

That’s why she started the session on Gardening.

One of the things she noticed was that gardening differs a lot depending on where you live.

“I forgot how natural everything grows in the Midwest and most of the participants were from Michigan.”

Things are a bit different on the high plains of Colorado.

“You have to tend the garden year-round, even in a cold season climate. It is so arid. Yesterday it was 50+ degrees, so I had to water plants and trees. The news here reminds people to water them especially if we have had three or more weeks without snow.”

Gardening started with the oak tree

The initial gardening topic was on oak trees. ReJean picked this tree to talk about because you can find it almost across the USA. The oak tree is prized in Colorado. It adds value to properties. Meanwhile, in the midwest, it can be seen as invasive or even a nuisance for some.

ReJean then learned a bit more about how oak trees are seen in the midwest. Since they grow without needing to attend it’s often not a tree people pay a lot of attention to in the midwest. Some of those in Michigan even had 20 in their back yard.  Meanwhile, in Colorado, just one tree is something to admire.

The group has a lot of diversity and ReJean hopes to be able to address that in future sessions. In the future, ReJean would like to include topics such as houseplants and indoor flowering plants for those who would like flowers and live in winter climates.

Members of the Interest group expressed interest in learning about topics such as vegetable gardening, ordering seeds, herbs, and seed tape.

"No matter what the topic is all plants have their seasons and need tending the only difference is when and how. I’d like the gardening group to be a universal conversation. It sounds like some of the people might live in senior communities, and they might not have a yard to plant or landscape, while at least one lady in Michigan has a 200-acre farm. I want to keep it to everyone’s level and interest.”

She realizes this may mean splitting the group in the future to more urban versus rural gardening to accommodate all interests.

ReJean sees this as a great opportunity for people to meet other people around a shared interest.
