With June being Brain Awareness month we are kicking off June with Guest Speakers focused on brain health, awareness, and how to rewire it to pursue your dreams. Make sure you don’t miss these amazing speakers to learn how to keep your brain healthy, active, and engaged.
According to the Alzheimer’s association, 1 in 3 seniors dies with Alzheimer’s or another dementia and these deaths increased 16% during the COVID-19 pandemic. Their research shows that there are 6 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s and nearly 13 million are projected to be living with it by 2050. Alzheimer's and dementia don't just affect the life of the person who has the disease but also millions of unpaid caregivers and loved ones. Unfortunately, unlike many other diseases the rates of Alzheimer's and dementia are increasing, so with that knowledge on hand it's essential we do what we can to keep our brains healthy.
The Alzheimer's Association has put together a list of the 10 Early Warning Signs and Symptoms of Alzheimer's. As you think about brain health, consider if these are affecting you or someone you love.
Want to know more about Alzheimer's and get your questions answered? Then join our special event with the Alzheimer's Association next week when Alzheimer’s Association educator Bill Brees shares more about this disease and ways to assist those suffering.
On June 1, Bill Brees, an Alzheimer’s Association educator, will join GetSetUp to share a bit about the impact of Alzheimer's and explain the difference between Alzheimer's and dementia. Plus Bill will help learners to understand the difference between risk factors, disease stages, and update them on some of the latest resources, research and treatments.
Bill Brees is officially retired but keeps up his brain health through a myriad of activities such as volunteering. He has a degree in human engineering and psychology. Currently he is an Alzheimer's Association Community Educator, a Public Diplomat certified by the U.S. Department of State to work with High School foreign exchange students in the USA, and a judge at K-12 STEM/Robotics tournaments.
To promote his brain health and plasticity, he's currently learning Arabic, tutored by a linguist life partner. His fitness routine and strength training support his hiking, SCUBA diving, river rafting, zip lining, and other outdoor activities. He's also a participant in the UCSF Memory and Aging Center aging brain longitudinal study in search of diagnostic tools, treatment, and prevention of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias.
Join Bill and other learners to assure you have the tools for a healthy aging brain and to assist anyone you love in recognizing the signs of Alzheimer's and dementia.
Alzheimer’s is not normal aging. It’s a disease of the brain that causes problems with memory, thinking and behavior. Join us to learn about the impact of Alzheimer’s, the difference between Alzheimer’s and dementia, Alzheimer’s disease stages and risk factors, current research and treatments available to address some symptoms, and Alzheimer’s Association resources.
One of the many great ways to keep your brain healthy is to learn new things! That means following your passions, and author, speaker, and lecturer Jeri Sedlar is coming on June 2 to speak about just that. Join her to learn how to discover your ‘drivers’ and understand where and how to use them to achieve greater fulfillment in your life. She will help you to learn how to rewire to create a life portfolio following your goals, plus tips and tricks for how to begin to change your life now (if you want to of course).
Jeri co-authored the highly acclaimed book, DON’T RETIRE, REWIRE! 5 Steps To Fulfilling Work That Fuels You. To read more about this philosophy see what GetSetUp learner Sharon had to say after she read the book.
For more than 20 years, Jeri has been traveling the globe from Dubai to Des Moines, actively researching individuals and organizations on the pleasure, pain and possibilities associated with an aging society. Her findings led to the creation of the five step Rewiring© process, which focuses on finding new purpose, new passions, new play and new work possibilities that promote healthy, fun and fulfilling futures. Her belief is that life planning done in conjunction with financial planning allows individuals to leverage their personal and professional assets to the fullest. She has emerged as one of the country’s leading thought - leaders on “the new way to do retirement,” or as she calls it rewirement.
A graduate of Michigan State University, Jeri recently moved with her husband from New York City to Sarasota, Florida. She has also served as Senior Advisor to The Conference Board on the Mature Workforce, and as a Judge for the AARP Best Employers Award for Workers 50+. She was a Delegate to the White House Conference on Aging and sat on the AARP Executive Council. As the former Editor-at-Large of Working Woman magazine, she has worked on key issues including work/life balance, flex time, glass ceiling and female entrepreneurship. In addition to that she currently sits on the board for a number of organizations including as an honorary Board member and former Chair of the YWCA’s Academy of Women Achievers.
Living longer and healthier lives demands new and creative planning to discover new passions, purpose and possibilities. Life was challenging before the pandemic and now making decisions and knowing what you want to do next is even harder. Author Jeri Sedlar will guide us in answering the question of what’s next using the highly successful 5 Step Rewiring Process found in her book, “Don’t Retire, REWIRE!” Jeri wants individuals to have the most fun and fulfilling futures imaginable. Through her work and on-going research over the past 20 years, Jeri knows that we sometimes need a “push” in the right direction to get started. Jeri is focused on helping individuals better understand the tangible and intangible aspects of planning for their next act, regardless of age or stage of life. Jeri’s goal is to help people identify what drives them; to unearth the people, places and things that will keep them engaged and connected with life throughout their life.
Don’t miss out on other great Guest Speakers. We are updating our list weekly.
