Learning never goes out of style. That’s why AgeSmart has partnered with GetSetUp to pilot its own personalized Learning Channel. This will allow AgeSmart members to stay connected to peers in a fun, interactive, and engaging way. AgeSmart used its subsidized state funding to show that older adults in their state matter with state-funded pilot programs to educate and help older adults age in place.
AgeSmart knows that aging can be complicated especially with factors like shifting health, family dynamics, finances, and more that's why they provide resources to help older adults age well their own way! AgeSmart’s Community Resources help older adults remain independent and in order to do that it is essential for them to stay connected and active.
Part of aging well is learning new skills so you can live your life to the fullest! That is why AgeSmart will be offering a free online learning pilot program for a limited time at www.AgeSmart.org.
These small group classes are taught by retired educators and are designed to keep older adults’ minds active. They allow learners to engage with others, increase their ability to live independently and help them learn new skills. These live classes provide for true interaction, not static videos. Most importantly, this is an outlet for older adults to have fun!
As people, age oftentimes changes lead to a more solitary lifestyle. Social circles may shrink, despite the fact that older adults often have even more time during their retirement. Some of these changes are due to health or mobility, and others are due to natural life shifts as people move through different phases in their lives. With social distancing measures, many Americans are overwhelmed with a sudden sense of loneliness. This often hits older adults’ hardest.
A University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) study found that adults 60 and over who reported feeling lonely had a higher risk for functional decline in addition to an increased risk of death. According to the study, functional decline generally affects participants’ abilities to perform daily living activities such as bathing, dressing, toileting, and eating that are necessary for truly independent living. Social interaction and learning are two methods that have been shown to help prevent this decline.
That is why GetSetUp offers live interactive classes that allow older adults to not only learn together but to interact with their peers. These classes are helping to battle loneliness and prevent its negative effects. You can read more about that here.
