5 Tips for plant-based eating

If you are ready to start eating plant-based, here are some quick tricks to help on your journey.

1. Make complete proteins. The human body can create all except nine of the essential amino acids it needs to function well. Complete proteins contain all nine of these amino acids and can be created through combining different foods that contain different proteins. For example whole wheat toast and nut butter makes a complete protein.

2. Try soy-based products. Today, supermarkets contain various soy-based products that are often cheaper and healthier than their animal-product counterparts. Soy chorizo, Impossible Burgers, and Beyond Beef are all great alternatives to meat. Try incorporating meat alternatives into recipes and snacks.

3. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are a component of all healthy eating but are critical when eating plant-based. They contain loads of fiber that help the digestive tract break down vitamins and nutrients the body needs. Fruits and veggies intake is associated with reduced risk of chronic diseases and healthy weight management. They are also natural anti-inflammatories, which can help regulate the body and prevent cancers, Alhezimer’s, and different types of arthritis. Find a full list of anti-inflammatories here.

4. Start gradually and listen to your body. Everyone's body is different and will react differently to changes in diet. It is essential to pay attention to your body and consult a professional if you feel that you are not getting the nutrition you need, regardless of what you are eating. 

5. Make your favorite foods and experiment. Having fun in the kitchen is one of the best ways to make food tasty. Try altering your recipes by using non-animal products and different spices. The flavor combinations are endless. Consider using tofu, jackfruit, lentils, tempeh, chickpeas, or beans to make your recipes deliciously plant-based.
