Interested in a Teaching Career?

Great Hearts Academies is hiring, and they're looking for older adults

GetSetUp Jobs is excited to partner with Great Hearts Academies, a growing network of tuition-free, in-person and online public charter schools dedicated to improving education nationwide. Great Hearts prepares students to be more than just proficient test takers, but rather to become great-hearted leaders capable of success throughout their higher education and professional careers.

They have online academies, brick-and-mortar schools in Arizona and Texas, and are expanding into Louisiana this fall. Their enrollment is 24,000 K-12 students, with 14,000 more on the waiting list.

Kiann Mapes, senior VP of talent, says that Great Hearts is distinct from a typical public school in that its central mission is about character and thoughtfulness and what it means to lead a good life. They cultivate the hearts and minds of students in the pursuit of truth, goodness, and beauty. And they’re looking for teachers who embody those principles.

“We want teachers who are alive intellectually, morally, and aesthetically. We’re looking for people who are lifelong learners and, irrespective of their own background, continue to seek knowledge and have a variety of interests. The ideal candidate is a model for living a good life—they are virtuous and participate in civil discourse. And they appreciate beauty whether in a poem, the classroom space, or a work of art.”

They value diversity among their faculty and staff in both education and experience. If you’re interested in teaching but don’t have teaching experience, don’t worry. They offer an apprentice teacher program, a year-long intensive paid position where you will be mentored by an experienced teacher in an elementary classroom. You’ll learn practical skills such as lesson planning, assessment, and classroom management.

They’re currently hiring retirees looking to re-enter the workforce or change careers, including part-time positions. In addition to full and part-time teaching roles, they’re also looking for people to fill co-curricular roles, including athletic coaches, substitute teachers, and tutors for their athenaeum after-school program. They also have fully remote positions.

They have a rolling cycle of applications year round including the summer. The application process is two-tiered. The first step is entering your contact information and uploading your resume. After an initial phone call, potential candidates are recommended to hiring managers, who will then connect via phone or Zoom. After this, candidates can visit the campus, observe classes, and maybe even teach a class.

They’re currently hiring for mid-year and for next fall. So if you’ve ever considered teaching as a career, please visit our GetSetUp Jobs site to learn more about Great Hearts Academies and their open positions.
